Uninor India has launched a new campaign all across India targetting the young customers. Uninor GSM service will be available through 1,000 distributors and 300,000 points of sale in place across India. Uninor mobile is providing the seamless GSM Mobile connectivity through 12,000 base stations in 7 telecom circles.

Tata Indicom Pay Per Call subscribers will have a fixed charge on a per-call basis – at

Re 1 for all local calls
Rs 3 for STD calls

This is regardless of the duration of the call (well almost – as there is a limit of 10 minutes). In the Tata Indicom Pay Per Call plan SMS are offered at a special price of 50 paise for both national and local messages.

Pay for what you use – One second Pulse

The company’s GSM service offers “pay-for-what-you-use” model, with a pulse of one second, and a pricing of one paise per second.

One paisa per second – all over India

Subscribers can call anywhere in India for just one paise per second.

When the Tata Docomo officials were asked about the financial viability of offering GSM service at one paise per second and pay-for-what-you-use model when other operators offer it on per-minute basis. The Tata Teleservices Ltd Managing Director Anil Sardana said the service has “unleashed usage” in the circles it has been launched with the company not only confident of beating its own internal targets but also surpassing them.

Pan India launch before this year end

This will be followied by pan India launch with an investment of $ 2 billion for rolling out the services across the country.

According to reports the 2004 established tech start-up, Sloka Telecom, may be acquired for Rs 30-35 crore. However the final confirmation is yet to be coming from players.

Sloka Telecom provides solutions in the areas of fixed WiMax, Mobile WiMax and 3G. The company claimed that its patent pending technology architecture gives price advantage in making smaller and cheaper telecom base stations primarily finding application in the semi-urban and rural areas. The company is winner of latest Nasscom Innovation Award 2008. The company is led by Sujai Karampuri, founder and CEO of Sloka Telecom.

Why 95 is removed?

This withdrawal decision was taken as per the directive from Department of Telecom (DoT), Government of India. This withdrawal came into effect from yesterday (9th March) midnight.

Now what?

After the withdrawal of 95 Dialing, Airtel’s fixed line customers will now be able to call these telephone numbers, which are earlier accessed through 95, by activating the STD facility and dialing the city STD code prefixed with 0. For example, to call Delhi, a customer in Gurgaon will need to dial 011 instead of 9511.

According to the reports, however, Airtel would also provide its customers the convenience of not activating their STD facility but continuing to access the cities which are within 500 kms of a telecom circle. They will need to dial the city STD code prefixed with 0. To access numbers outside of this perimeter, the customer will have to activate his STD facility by calling 121 from his Airtel fixed lined number. The customer will continue to be billed for all calls as per the prevailing tariff.

It mat be recalled that MTNL was first to launch it 3G Jadoo Mobile Services in India at Delhi.

Under 3G services the subscribers will be able to enjoy mobile data transfer speeds of 2 mbps from the present 144 kbps which will help them in video screening of calls, video on demand, mobile surveillance, live TV, movie downloads, and more as and when BSNL supports it.

BSNL has also tied up with Nokia, Sony and Samsung for handset bundling, the cheapest of 3G handset is available at Rs.7,000.

What is surprising that these amaller cities are 3G equipped while countries financial capital Mumbai is still waiting for its turn?

Motorola has been setting up the core network for MTNL for this launch. Initially, services will be launched in central Delhi, including Connaught Place, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate and Minto Road. The services will later be extended to Gurgaon. MTNL has earlier said it would offer 3G services free to its high-spending mobile customers initially. But as per the website the services are charged with tarriff of Rs. 500 as actication fee and 599 as the recurring charges every month.

MTNL competes with private firms, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular and Tata Teleservices, in India. State-owned telcos MTNL and BSNL were given 3G spectrum last year before the private players, giving them the first mover’s advantage.

What is 3G mobile service?
3G services on a mobile phone allow customers to access the Internet and data applications at speeds of up to 2 megabytes per second. Mobile users can have access to advanced services such as video calls, broadband wireless data, faster online video streaming and a better gaming experience.

Background of 3G services in India

Currently all mobile services are provided over the second generation (2G) network. It may be noted that there were delays in rollout of 3G services by private operators with the 3G policy being referred to a group of ministers (GoM). Auction for 3G spectrum was earlier delayed due to differences between the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the finance ministry over the base price and the number of 3G operators in each circle.

BSNL is also expected to launch commercial 3G services soon.

Unitech has agreed to sell a 60% stake in the telecom business to Norway’s Telenor, said in a notice to the stock exchange the allotment had been made for Assam, Rajasthan, North East and Jammu & Kashmir service areas.
