Spurious liquor or Hooch claimed 110 lives on Today Dec 14th 2011 morning in South 24 Parganas district and death toll rises to 110. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered an enquiry on deaths. According to reports 7 deaths were reported from Bangur, 6 from Chhittaranjan and the rest from Diamond Harbour hospitals, official sources said. Many persons were admitted to hospitals yesterday. All were fell ill after strong spurious liquor from several illegal joints yesterday.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that 8 persons were arrested in first round inquiry into the incident, but the owner of the liquor den Badshah Khokon, named in the FIR, was absconding.
110 deaths because of Spurious liquor:
The persons dead mostly include -
- Labourers
- Rickshaw-pullers
- Hawkers
After the incident locals had smashed a liquor manufacturing unit at Mograhat and the joints from where it was being sold at Sangrampur. The deaths were reported from different hospitals since early morning, they said. Postmortem of all the 110 bodies has been done and the bodies were handed over to the families of the victims.
Although the state government had declared a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those who died. Mamta Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal is facing tough questions from citizens over the deaths. It may be recalled that just few days back 85 persons have died in a fire in AMRI hospital in Kolkota.
West Bengal hooch deaths have definitely increased the problems for Mamta Banerjee. She however at the moment is facing the challenges with a brave face.
