FDI in retail sector issue in Parliament

The led UPA government for its decision to allow 50% Foreign Direct Investment () in retail sector, the Centre on Monday arranged an all-party meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue further.The all-party meeting would be headed either by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee or Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Sing. According to reports, DMK Chief M Karunanidhi said the Centre’s insistence that states should go by the decision cannot be justified. DMK had opposed trade even when the idea was originally mooted. In both Houses of Parliament were disrupted by the opposition members demanding an immediate roll back on the government’s decision to open up the retail sector for foreign players.

The Opposition MPs demanded a full-fledged debate and slammed it for not discussing the issue with major political parties before taking such a drastic decision. The Houses were first postponed till noon. The opposition rejected to give up when the Houses rearranged leading to adjournemnt for the day.
