Why UP CM Mayavathi plans to divide and rule STATE?

Reorganization of UP: UP CM Mayavathi is to declare the reorganization of Uttar Pradesh, dividing the state into 4 parts, the bill for creation of new states can be introduced in the House of Parliament on the proposal of the President. If the bill affects the area or any of the states, President would refer the bill to the administration of the state for expressing its views within a period.

Uttar Pradesh is the India’s most populous state, as well as the world’s most populous sub-national entity. Were it a nation in its own right, Uttar Pradesh would be the world’s fifth most populous country ahead of Brazil, a country thirty-five times larger in territorial area. Uttar Pradesh is the second largest state-economy in India contributing 8.34% to India’s total GDP in the financial year 2010.

Former SP leader Amar Singh also declared that he would hold a rally on November 13 at Sarnath in Varanasi in support of the creation of Poorvanchal. Whether it had any specific plan for trifurcation or was raising the issue only to arrest anti-incumbency and divert public attention from the corruption and breakdown of law and order under Mayawati’s rule.

Mayawati’s planning about 4 new states and supporters:

• Mayawati is planning to cut four new states out of the country’s largest state which, with its 75 districts, is larger than many countries.
• The eastern part of the state with 32 districts will form a new state of Poorvanchal.
• The 22 western districts will be grouped together as Harit Pradesh.
• Bundelkhand will take 7 districts and remaining 14, all in central UP, will comprise the fourth.
• Parties distrustful of Maya’s move to divide state ahead of polls
• The BJP has been supporting smaller states but has chosen to downplay Mayawati’s proposal.
• Congress has been supporting the creation of Bundelkhand on the ground that its distance from Lucknow has contributed to its backwardness.
• BJP, that cuts Uttarakhand out of UP, has always delighted itself for its commitment to smaller states.
• Samajwadi Party is categorical in its opposition to the splintering plan.

According to sources, move has got force now because of the impending elections, with BSP sources hoping that it would set the schedule for the coming polls, while diverting attention away from the incumbency. The hope is not without basis because almost all political parties have at various times advocated division of the state into smaller units.
