In Kashmir rape of a 30 year old woman allegedly by two Army personnel has put the Army on a back foot. After Chief Minister has assured firm and swift action a special investigation team (SIT) of police has been formed. Yesterday it was alleged that two Army persons carrying assault rifles and a radio set have abducted and raped a 30 year old married tribal woman in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday. She returned home on Thursday and alleged she had been held hostage in a meadow hutment for nearly 48 hours by the criminals. The incident occurred in Manzgam, Gujjardar village in south Kashmir Kulgam district, 65 km from Srinagar.
The special investigation team will be conducting an identification parade of army personnel on Saturday in the presence of a magistrate. In a special communique all the army personnel deployed on duty in the area have been told not to leave the area before their identification parade.
According to unconfirmed reports the preliminary medical examination has not confirmed any violence marks on the woman’s body. Her vaginal swaps and other samples necessary for forensic evidence have been collected by the doctors and are sent for investigation.
This is not the first time that Army has been accused on rape and assault of women in Kashmir. Indian Army has to carry out a massive PR exercise to clean its image.
