UP Farmers Agitation on land acquisition policy has been continuing as Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi was arrested today on May 12, 2011, and Rahul Gandhi has been released immediately following Bhatta Parasul village visit in Noida for UP Farmers Agitation on land acquisition policy.
Rahul Gandhi, who was arrested along with AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress MPs Raj Babbar and Parvez Hashmi with some others and spent nearly 1 day at Bhatta Parasul, Noida under Sec 151 CrPC at around 11 p.m. and was taken to the Kasna police station. Later released on bail by the Uttar Pradesh Police and brought to Delhi at 2:15 a.m.
Senior party leader and Law Minister M Veerappa Moily admonished the arrest saying that the arrest of Rahul Gandhi was an “arbitrary action” as Rahul Gandhi went to Batta Parsaul, to solve the livelihood, natural and farmers’ issue and the state government has acted in a most irresponsible manner by arresting him,” he added.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “We are working towards the Land Acquisition Act but till such time the law is amended there is absolutely nothing which requires the government to acquire land at throwaway prices without negotiations and to give it to rich persons for rich projects”.
Farmers in the region have been agitating for the past few weeks over acquisition of land for building the Noida-Agra Yamuna Expressway and a township being developed by a private infrastructure company. He wanted a new law on land acquisition to be enacted by the government. Singh also sought to know why the bill in this regard was allowed to lapse in the previous Lok Sabha. Rajnath Singh also wanted the new Bill to include a provision preventing acquisition of fertile land.
