Ruchika case Judgement put off till May 25: Verdict on Rathore

Judgement put off till May 25, 2010: Verdict on ’s plea to be announced later on. Additional district and sessions Judge , who heard the arguments continuously on day-to-day basis for eight days, said the judgment will be pronounced on May 25.

Earlier on December 21, 2009, the retired IPS officer was convicted for molesting Ruchika, a budding tennis player. He was sentenced to six months’ rigorous imprisonment by the court.

However, the hearings were adjourned for a long time following the attack on Rathore on February 8 by a Banaras-based youth. The day-to-day proceedings of the case held in-camera resumed on May 3 and concluded on May 11. The disgraced former top cop had sought setting aside of the trial court verdict against him while the Ruchika family and the CBI had sought maximum punishment of two years for 68-year-old Rathore.

Ruchika was allegedly molested by the former DGP on August 12, 1990, at Haryana Lawn Tennis Association office in Sector 6, Panchkula. Unable to bear the harassment, Ruchika later committed suicide.

Ruchika’s father SC Girhotra, who was present in the court on Thursday, said that he was not disappointed at the judgment being deferred.

“We are not disappointed. It is just a matter of 4-5 days. Justice will be done. Rathore will be punished. There is nothing wrong in the judgment delay. Such things happen in courts. Maybe, the judge wanted more time to write the judgment which should be a long one,” he said.

Anand Parkash, main complainant in this case, said: “We are expecting maximum jail-term for Rathore. He deserves no mercy from any quarter and we have full belief in Indian judiciary.

Earlier, the CBI had argued on the presentation of evidence before the court. Meanwhile, 29-year-old Utsav Sharma, who had inflicted knife injuries on Rathore while he was coming out of a court on February eight and was granted bail, appeared in a court here today. The court extended his bail till August 16 when he is to appear in the case before it.
