David Shepherd former Test umpire & one of cricket’s best-loved character is died. ‘Shep’ passed away at the age of 68 after losing his battle with cancer, enjoyed a successful playing career with Gloucestershire, scoring more than 10,000 runs for them over 14 years.
His death news has made fans cry, who always intended to see him standing onelegged. David Robert Shepherd MBE was one of the cricket world’s best-known umpires.
He stood in 92 Test matches, the last of them in June 2005.An umpire in 1981 and from there he rose to the top of the tree, standing in three successive World Cup finals in 1996, 1999 and 2003.
Shepherd was born in Bideford, Devon and latterly lived in the nearby seaside village of Instow.
He married his long time partner, Jenny, in 2008.Shepherd was awarded the MBE for services to cricket in 1987, and he became the President of his home county club Devon in 2006.
