Tyeb Mehta is no more – died early Thursday morning in Mumbai

tyeb-mehta noted artist / died early Thursday morning at his residence in Mumbai. Tyeb Mehta (84-year) was suffering from heart problems.

Tyeb Mehta was born in Gujarat in 1925. Tyeb Mehta spent an initial period working as a film editor in a cinema laboratory. He received his diploma in painting from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai, in 1952. He is survived by his wife Sakina, a son and a daughter.

We recall some of his achievements on his death

  • One of Tyeb Mehta’s canvas at a Christie’s auction in June 2008 fetched him his highest-ever price of $2 million.
  • Tyeb Mehta’s canvas ‘Kali’- a dramatic, disturbing work depicting the Goddess with a gouged mouth, broke the Rs 1 crore barrier in 2005
  • Tyeb Mehta’s ‘Celebration’- an expanse of shrouded figures, went for Rs 1.5 crore in 2002.
  • Tyeb Mehta received the Padma Bhushan in 2007.
