M Karunanidhi the Tamil Nadu chief minister went an a sudden indefinite fast on Monday morning demanding immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. It may be noted that troops have closed in on the remaining strip of Tiger stronghold leaving many Tamil civilians trapped. M Karunanidhi the 84-year-old DMK patriarch has not planned anything like thins till late yesterday night.
It may be recalled that just yesterday Colombo rejected the LTTE’s ceasefire offer, calling it a “joke”.
“Let me be one of his (Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse’s) victims” – M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK President
Son M K Azhagiri also goes on fast
Soon after Karunanidhi began his fast, his son M K Azhagiri also launched a fast along with hundreds of DMK workers in Madurai from where he is contesting the Lok Sabha election.
Why a change in M Karunanidhi’s decision
M Karunanidhi the DMK patriarch’s abrupt decision comes just two days after AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa made a dramatic shift in her party’s position on the Lankan issue, insisting that only a Tamil Eelam would end the decades-long ethnic strife. It seems that all the political parties are not trying to provoke the sentiments to gain on the voter base. The Sri Lankan Tamils problem is fast becoming a major campaign issue in the May 13 Lok Sabha polls in Tamilanadu with all major opposition parties turning the spotlight on it.
