Anti Obesity drug Rimonabant banned in India – Ranbaxy, Sun Pharma and Zydus Cadila may call back?

The country’s top drug regulator Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) or DCGI has asked the ministry to ban the drug immediately anti-obesity drug that is already banned the world over

Rimonabant sold under brands such as Slimona, Obitone and Riobant allegedly causes suicidal tendencies in consumers. The drug is a the money-spinning drug and was launched just two years ago in India.

In December 2008, DCGI has already written to several companies, including Ranbaxy, Sun Pharma and Zydus Cadila, to stop manufacturing the drug. But it is still available in the market.

Leading companies that have the drug Rimonabant in their fat-fighting pills, include Ranbaxy, Sun Pharma and Zydus Cadila. A ban will force them to recall their bottles from chemist shops. Rimonabant, invented by French drug major Sanofi Aventis, is available in India, as a generic.
