Schedule of Lok Sabha elections 2009 – Dates of General elections in India – April 16 to May 13 – counting on May 16

The dates / schedule for the elections 2009 has been announced today afternoon. The full Election Commission addressed a press conference at 1530 hours and announced the schedule. Along with the schedule, the schedule for assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim is also announced.

The country will go to polls from April 16 to May 13. Counting of votes will be done on May 16 and the 15th Lok Sabha will be constituted by June two.

Election dates

  • April 16 – 124 constituencies
  • April 23 – 141 constituencies (Manipur April 22)
  • April 30 – 107 constituencies
  • May 7 – 85 constituencies
  • May 13 – 86 constituencies

Phase wise elections

  • Five-phased polls -  Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh
  • Four-phased elections  – Bihar
  • Three-phased polls – Maharashtra and West Bengal
  • Two phase polls – Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Punjab
  • One-day polling – remaining 15 states and seven union territories

It can be recalled that yesterday President rejected the controversial recommendation by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami for the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla. This means that Navin Chawla’s will be the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) after Gopalaswami leaves the office on April 20.

The Election Commission has decided the dates of the general elections after completing consultation process with political leaders, home secretary and secretaries of key ministries and state governments.
