National Science Day is celebrated all over the country on February 28 to mark the discovery of Raman Effect, which earned a Nobel prize for great Indian scientist Sir C V Raman in 1928.
Science enthusiasts all over the country will participate and organize host of programs on science on the occasion of National Science Day.
To mark the day this year in 2009, a Festival of Measurement and Space Fair will be held at Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi. It is being organised by Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), an NGO. The fair will focus on activities related to explorations with basic measurements and on astronomy for visitors of all ages, she said.
The fair will provide hands-on experience in science for the young minds. Various stalls will be put up where visitors can see and perform science-based experiments and activities. The stalls would showpiece various equipment like pinhole camera and spectroscope. The viewers will be able to have fascinating views of the sun through the power solar telescope, SPACE Director C B Devgun said.
To teach basic measurements, there will be a length measurement corner, time measurement corner with a Sundial Park, a temperature corner and a heights and distances corner. Some fun element will also be added in the fair by making pinhole camera, where one can get lost in the subdued shadowy world inside a camera. Cricket wickets will be used to explain Kepler’s laws, which are also celebrating 400 years of coming into existence this year.
Similar programs are organized at Mumbai, Kolkota, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
