University Grant Commission UGC declares 22 fake universities

University Grant Commission (UGC) released a list of 22 fake universities that have been functioning in different parts of the country. Uttar Pradesh is having as many as nine of such institutions and Delhi running a close second with six. One each in Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bangal.

As per the UGC Act, only those universities that have been established under an Act of Parliament or state legislature or granted a deemed university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act are entitled to call themselves universities and confer degrees. The fake institutions are ususlly not created through legislation, many of them register as societies under the Societies Registration Act with the object of running educational programmes and conferring degrees.

• Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, Prayag (Allahabad)
• National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy (Kanpur)
• Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University), Achaltal (Aligarh)
• Vishwavidyalaya, Kosi Kalan (Mathura)
• Maharana Pratap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya (Pratapgarh)
• Indraprastha Shiksha Parishad, Institutional Area Khoda, Makanpur (Noida)
• Gurukul Vishwavidyala (Vridanvan).

Delhi

• Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Varanasi, Jagatpuri (Delhi)
• Indian Institute of Science and Engineering (New Delhi)
• Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj (Delhi)
• United Nations University (Delhi)
• Vocational University (Delhi)
• ADR-Centric Juridical University, Rajendra Place (New Delhi).

Other states

• Maithili University/Vishwavidyalaya, Darbhanga (Bihar)
• Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Gokak, Belgaum (Karnataka)
• St Johns University, Kishanattam (Kerala)
• Kesarwani Vidyapith, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh)

What is surprising is that such universities are functioning in and near the capital city of New Delhi where all the government establishment including UGC is located.
