Delhi 6 is the new film by young rebel, filmmaker Rakeysh Mehra who picked the limelight by making Rang De Basanti.
Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), the archetype for the NRI babalog, arrives in India Daryaganj (Delhi-6 – PIN code) on a short trip to leave his ailing grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) home. Gradma doesn’t want to die in the foreign land (New York) and forces her son to send her back to her old haveli in Chandni Chowk. The son hates India because of a communal incident of past which had forced him to leave India with his Muslim wife, so the responsibility falls on grandson who thought it as a short trip with sight-seeing.
Dadi as expected calls on all her relatives and friends of past and tries to live the life she never got in NY. Roshan however learns the life in India in the curious NRI way – seeing cows in the middle of street, Ramleela, kites, pigeon (yes you see one in promo), jalebi etc.
But what the NRI mind could not understand was why some people in India are untouchable; why the cops are unfriendly, why his uncles (Om Puri, Pavan Malhotra) have built a wall in their middle of their house, and why wives gossip relentlessly. Also why his love interest Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) has her wings clipped (remember song Masakali) when she can fly like him to fulfil her dreams.
Film is good in first half but after the interval it looks stretched. The climax is not very appealing. You may watch it for the Desi theme and if you are NRI – it is must. Sometimes I feel these days most of the movies are made to appeal NRIs.
AR Rahman’s Masakali is already a chartbuster. Sonam Kapoor is good and looks mature compared to her debut film. Abhishek has portrayed the ‘kirdaar’ of NRI baba effectively. Unlike RDB Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra could not create the magic here.
