Srilanka military offence against LTTE & Pranab Mukherjee’s visit

Srilankan military claimed to have captured Mullaithivu, the last bastion of , and that its offensive was ’95 per cent’ complete.

Meanwhile Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee is visiting in the backdrop of repeated demands by Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and other political leaders. They have demanded that Mukherjee should be sent to Sri Lanka to ensure an end to military offensive against LTTE.

Before leaving for Colombo, Mukherjee told reporters in New Delhi that India has no sympathy for LTTE but wanted to see that civilian Tamils do not become victims of conflict.

“We are for fight against terrorists and all sorts of terrorism. Therefore, we have no sympathy for any terrorist activity indulged in by any organization, particularly LTTE (which) is a banned organization in India.” Pranab Mukherjee, Foreign Minister India

This is definitely slight change in tone in India (which was earlier not so openly against LTTE) as it continues to garner support from internation community against terrorism. Obviously India can not discriminate between terrororism in India and Srilanka and hence this very clear message of no sympathy for LTTE.

Hoping that the democratic process in Sri Lanka would expeditiously improve the lot of the Tamils, foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee has sought an assurance from the country that safety of civilians will be kept under consideration during the offensive against LTTE.

The minister was told that the president has extended an invitation to Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa to be part of a Tamil delegation to visit the war-ravaged northern parts of the country.
