What is the meaning of slumdog

What is the meaning of slumdog? Many web surfers are asking. No dictionary has any entry for the word slumdog.

  1. Is it – dog from the slum area.. like street dog
  2. Or it has some similarity of underdog (which means “One that is at a disadvantage” or “One that is expected to lose a contest or struggle, as in sports or politics”) So slumdog means an underdog from slums

The second one makes more sense. May be se all can see the movie and find the meaning. Right Danny?

Well here is from the mouth of film-maker himself, who wanted to end all the controversies surrounding the movie:

Boyle said protest was “part of the fabric of life in India … For us, ‘slumdog’ was always a very affectionate term because … it was a hybrid, a mixture of underdog and rooting for the underdog, and obviously he comes from the slums.”

Now all the critics of name may rest their pen (or fingers if they are using comps).

Whatever meaning it may carry -a dog from slum or an underdog from slum the word has been used in a derogtory manner and in bad taste ! Even if it hs been used metaphoriclly it is derogatory to use such a word for fellow human beings and reflects bad on English mannerism!

The guys making such a fuss about the word “dog” should first learn to respect those around them – then shout about how hurtful a mere word is supposed to be to a community or city or even country and try to rake up passions unnecessarily.
It appears that we are truly underemployed as so many “intellectuals” spend hours and hours trying to find a way to make the “educationally challenged” among us alighn with their meaningless twisting of words and actions, categorized as “anti national” or “anti religious” or any such contortion that boils the blood of sufficient number of “masses”. Add to this the 30 odd “24 hr news channels” that are nothing more than tabloids that rush in with cameras and mike thrusters and then put together some hotch potch of “BREAKING NEWS” intermingled with jerky camera work and interviews of anyone who cares to say something but has nothing worthwhile to say. The so called news readers who at best have 3-4 rehearsed lines and cannot even conduct a decent interview or an unbiased coverage of any event.
